Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely gotten through winter in Bishop just yet. Mother Nature has provided us with a few nice days, but she’s always ready to remind us that she’s in charge. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call us for out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall may bury your air conditioner in the snow, hindering its performance when the temperatures start to warm up for the season. Not to mention it can inhibit a high-efficiency system from performing as such. The situation could become an even bigger problem too if you don’t plan for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are things you can do as a homeowner to help your air conditioner operate properly even though snow has fallen or could fall in the approaching days and weeks.

  1. Ensure you have a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Walk around the area regularly to make sure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that could have accumulated through the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, placing a cover over your air conditioner may end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner could be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, possibly meaning damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Bishop will most likely fluctuate up and down over the last few days of cold weather, you can’t count out the probability of weather that can change the performance of your air conditioner. At Bishop Heating & Air Conditioning in Bishop, we are always available to take a look at any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re about air conditioner service or buying a new system.
