When it’s a warm summer afternoon in Bishop, nothing is worse than realizing your home comfort system isn’t working the way it is supposed to. The last thing you need to do is request air conditioner repair. But your HVAC is a fairly intricate system, so it can be almost impossible to determine what’s triggering the issue on your own.

That’s why Bishop Heating & Air Conditioning created this guide to help you figure out what may be happening with your home comfort system. From here, you’ll find a couple common situtations that explain why your house is feeling a little too warm. And even though a few of these are straightforward] DIY tasks, you may have to bring in a pro for air conditioner repair.

And if you need us, Bishop Heating & Air Conditioning is ready to assist. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your home in Bishop.

1. Your Device Settings May Be Incorrect

Every home sets their thermostat a little differently to suit their distinct preferences. Yet, a number of homeowners make the misstep of setting their device to “On” as opposed to “Auto.” Under this setting, the fan in your system will continue to produce an air current even when you’ve reached your set temperature.

This can feel like your vents are pushing out warm air, when really it’s just employing the fan more frequently than required. Trying changing this setting and see if things change.

2. Your HVAC Needs to Be Cleaned

There are two central spaces to investigate for dirt or dust accumulation when your AC doesn’t feel like it is operating well.

Firstly, check out your HVAC filter. If you don’t switch your filter often enough, built-up dust can make it hard for air to pass through and cool your house. If your filter is obviously dirty or dusty, it’s likely time to replace it. (And as a rule, you have to change it about once every three months at a minimum.)

If your filter is looking good, go to your outdoor unit. Make sure there’s a reasonable amount of space around it and clean up plants or debris stuck there. This section of your AC discharges the heat from within your home. If the coils outside are congested, you won’t be feeling comfortable indoors.

We recommend scheduling professional air conditioner maintenance every year to keep your system operating smoothly and to keep your warranty valid.

3. Your Unit is Releasing Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the substance that cools the air in your house. It moves between your indoor and outside system pieces to absorb and release heat, to help your home stay the right temperature. If there is an opening along that system, you won’t be comfortable again until you schedule professional air conditioning repair.

Signs of a refrigerant leak include a lack of conditioned air, pricier utility bills, frozen evaporator coils and odd hissing noises originating from your AC.

If you suspect refrigerant could be leaking, call Bishop Heating & Air Conditioning for system repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be hazardous to your family’s health.

4. One or More Pieces Should Be Replaced

Your system contains a a handful of essential parts. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If one of these is not working as it should, your home comfort is hurt.

Our Bishop Heating & Air Conditioning experts are certified and knowledged in HVAC. They can help you diagnose and mend any trouble.

5. Your Whole System Should Be Upgraded

If your equipment is more than 10 years old, it could likely be a good time to look into new air conditioner installation. As your system ages, it unfortunately won’t function as well as it did in the beginning. And it may be making your space too warm.

If your system is newer but still isn’t cooling things off, it might be too small for your house. Air conditioners are not all the same size. A cooling system that’s undersized absolutely can’t chill a home the way a properly sized air conditioner can.
